Dumps & Landfills

How we check listings

Dumps & Landfills lists public places where you can take your own trash, bulky items and hazardous waste.

Every listing comes from the operator's own website: the county, city or contractor that runs the site. We read their hours page, fee schedule and hazardous waste page, and link each one under "Sources" on the listing.

Each listing shows the date we last checked it. Counties often change fees on January 1 or October 1, and sites open and close, so we re-check every listing at least every three months.

When an official page is missing a detail or contradicts itself, the listing says so and asks you to call ahead, rather than guessing.

We start each state from its official facility list (in Texas, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's list of permitted municipal solid waste facilities), keep only the sites the public can use, and add the drop-off and hazardous waste sites that counties and cities run. Map positions come from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) or the state list.

Dumps & Landfills is independent. It is not run by, or affiliated with, any government agency or waste company.
